Michigan Summer 2012

Our time here in Michigan is coming to a close (only two more days) and as I reflected on our time here, I decided to blog about some of our highlights this summer and procrastinate packing! When we found out Tyler got his internship with Whirlpool in Michigan, we decided it would be best for him to start in May and for me to continue working in Utah until July. May and June were tough months, but it made us appreciate our time together a lot more! This was the last picture we took together before we were apart.
Although I grew up in North Dakota (with no mountains, cities, etc.), and Tyler grew up in Denver (lots of mnts, cities, etc.), we at first found Michigan a hard adjustment. It was hard to leave the mountains, the culture, the cities, and such. But we found that Michigan has a lot to offer and below are some moments from our time here. Michigan's Sunset (Lake Michigan)
We only have a 2-hour drive to Chicago! Chicago Temple:
Chicago Cubs & Wrigley Field:
Chicago Pizza:
Segway Tour:
Taste of Chicago Festival
Only 4 hours away from Amanda!
Only 6 hours away from Nauvoo:
Play on our Whirlpool softball team:
Although I could keep going on with pictures, I'll just highlight more things we did...

  •  -volunteer at Benton Harbor Boys & Girls Club
  • -volunteer at the Therapeutic Equestrian Center
  • -Rachel got the inside view of TR at Mary Free Bed
  • -Rachel & Tyler got to talk with a TR veteran
  • -Go to South Bend for a festival and Silver Hawks Baseball Game
  • -Go to Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo for Fourth of July
  • -get visits from both of our parents
  • -watch the olympics
  • -go to the YMCA almost every day
  • -go to the BEACH - silver beach and tiscornia beach
We have been so blessed to have been able to do so many things and meet so many wonderful people. My favorite part about being here in Michigan was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity Tyler had with Whirlpool and that we got to spend time together!

Happy Earth Day!

This past week has been a great start to this summer and lots of things have happened! On Wednesday, Tyler finished his last final, so we went to Malawi's Pizza to celebrate, which was delicious and every day all I want to do is go back there. A cool thing about Malawi's Pizza is that every meal purchased there, a meal is donated to the country Malawi.
We also went to the dollar theater to see Mission Impossible 4, which I actually thought was pretty good! On Thursday, my dad got his Ph.D., so now I get to come him Dr. Daddy!! Congrats Daddy, we love you!!! We also got to coach our soccer kids on Thursday and Saturday. We have such an awesome team, they all show up on time and are such fun to be around. Here is a picture of one of our players while waiting on the sideline.
On Friday, we went to go to the Disney Nature Chimpanzee Movie! I love the disney nature movies and this was a great one!! Also, today is Earth Day and my sister and brother-in-law are coming over for dinner. So for the first time, I made fruit pizza. I'm excited to see what it tastes like. And all day today, discovery channel is playing Frozen Planet all day! O how I love nature and nature shows!!
I hope you all have a fabulous earth day!

Done & Certified!

HOORAY!

I took my last final tonight and am officially finished with my last Winter Semester ever at BYU! On top of that, I earned my Advanced First Aid and Basic Life Support Certification!!

For my internship next Winter, we have to be CPR Certified and I was so nervous to learn first aid and CPR all in one 2- or 3-hour night class so I decided to take a semester-long class! It was so worth it, I know what to do (and hopefully will remember) what to do all the way from heart attacks, broken bones, bites, natural disasters, to delivering a baby and I actually feel confident in my skills-especially when it comes to delivering a baby!

Since I am all done, I decided to congratulate myself by buying some delicious cheesecake. Tyler and I can't celebrate together yet because he still has two finals left and is still pretty stressed, so i just enjoyed my cheesecake while enjoying the beautiful Utah scenery:

Now I have ONE WHOLE WEEK of freedom until my spring physiology class starts. So no more instumental music for the next week, I can actually enjoy songs that have lyrics, watch movies, and surf the internet!

This will be a wonderful week, my pandora station has already proved it by playing my first song of the week with lyrics, which happened to be "The Dog Days are Over" by Florence & the Machine!

Have a great week and more pics to come from our soccer team!

I'll try this again!

I'm pretty sure no one reads this, but for the sake of memories for Ty and I, I want to try and keep this updated this summer, because for us, we have quite the adventure ahead of us!

First off, what a semester, lots of things happened that neither of us expected-both have new jobs, more weight, more accomplishments, and more love and we are so excited for what the summer will hold.
This picture summarizes the hard work we have done this semester:

At the Marriott School Closing social, I was a recipient of the Bateman Award but without a doubt it belongs to both of us and helps motivate us to keep on goin'!

We only have finals week left from Winter Semester and I should be done Monday and hopefully Tyler will be done Wednesday-then the weekend break and spring classes start, haha! Spring semester will be bittersweet because Tyler leaves for Michigan on May 10 and I'll be left carless and alone until June 23, then I get to go join him in Michigan.

I have stated a list of reasons why I'm excited for Michigan:
*Get to be w/ Tyler in a totally new place
*Get to be only 1 hr 1/2 from chicago-so hopefully that means shopping, broadway plays, cub game(s), blue man group, food, etc.
*Get to go to a beach and be in the midwest at the same time
*Only 3 hrs away from my best friend AMANDA (who gets back in 32 days-trying not to count)
*I'm sure there will be lots more!

My goal is to take lots of pictures and document this summer through pictures. For now, I probably won't blog until Finals are done and hopefully I'll have pictures of our super cute soccer team!

Baby Steps to Barbie (by my sister-Darci Garcia)

Baby Steps Away From Barbie

In July 2011 the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority banned cosmetics ads from L'Oreal/Lancome featuring Julia Roberts and Maybelline featuring Christy Turlington because the use of Photoshop caused the images to be misleading about the advertised product. In December 2011 America’s National Advertising Division banned Proctor & Gamble’s CoverGirl mascara ad because of its misleading photo created by Photoshop. It was a great baby step forward, but there is a lot of work to do in regards to Photoshopping ads.

Although there have been several examples of obvious Photoshopping like the obvious Ralph Lauren ad in October 2009 in which the model’s head was bigger than her hips, Photoshopping goes on all the time in less glaringly obvious ways. In August 2010 the website for Ann Taylor accidentally posted the photo on the left until the photoshopped image on the right replaced it.

Another less glaringly obvious photoshopped image is of Faith Hill on the July 2007 cover of the magazine Redbook. Her arm, back, and waist have been slimmed down, and wrinkles have been erased.

The following link is to a short video about photoshopping that makes me laugh and shudder at the same time:http://vimeo.com/34813864 The video comically spoofs photoshopping while making the point that most of the images we see are not real.

Although the photoshopped images are not real, they present images of women who have “obtained” the perfect body, best typified by the Barbie doll. If Barbie was a human she would be 5’9”, weigh 110 pounds, and have an 18 inch waist, 36 inch breasts, and 33 inch hips (Durham, 2008, 95-96).

Cosmetic surgery is on the rise throughout the world and most people seeking cosmetic surgery are women attempting to attain the Barbie body. (There are, of course, several factors in the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery; however, the constant bombardment of society with Barbie-like images as the ideal beauty plays a large role.) According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2010 the total number of cosmetic procedures conducted in America was 13,117,063 for a total cost of approximately $10.1 billion.

According to the Webster’s dictionary, mutilation is defined as “the act of maiming, crippling, cutting up, or altering radically so as to damage seriously essential parts of the body”. The act of cosmetic surgery itself can be seen as mutilation of the body. Proponents of cosmetic surgery shudder at the idea of cosmetic surgery as mutilation and instead often describe it as empowering. However,

“[a]s more and more cosmetic procedures are presented as ‘empowering choices’ that we'd be silly not to at least consider- breast implants which can cause chronic pain and disease, injections to deaden the nerves in our feet so we can keep wearing those high heeled shoes, surgery to make our vulvas resemble that of a famous porn star, permanent makeup tattooed onto our faces, liposuction or stripping of varicose veins which can lead to chronic nerve pain- the greater is the pressure on us to conform, and the smaller the space in which we get to be content with ourselves the way we are” (Winter, 2004, 14).

I have heard and read arguments against banning photoshopped images. Several of these arguments claim that consumers of the images realize they are not completely realistic and that there is nothing wrong with companies marketing their products in the most alluring manner as possible. I disagree with those arguments. Photoshopping is essentially cutting out unwanted parts and is, in a sense, mutilating the body of the photographed person. As can been seen in the above photographs the women are beautiful even without the nonrealistic alterations conducted by photoshopping. The constant bombardment of photoshopped images causes both men and women to idealize a body type that is physically impossible to attain in the real world.

Even though I know that the images are extensively photoshopped, I still criticize my own body in light of the ideals that are aggressively displayed in the media. I understand the importance of exercising and eating right in order to take care of my body. I know that the ideal portrayed in the media is physically impossible. But what keeps me from stopping on the treadmill when my lungs are bursting, my face is bright red, and I’m drenched with sweat is the hope that I will fit into those jeans again. I don’t think I’m the only one who has this dichotomous way of thinking. So while I am thrilled that the advertising watchdogs are taking the baby step of banning misleading photoshopped images in cosmetic ads, I hope that advertisements begin to show real women instead of photoshopped shadows of women. I realize that will take a very long time. Meanwhile, I will continue to take my own baby steps towards better internalization of my knowledge about the impossibility of the Barbie body and acceptance of my own body.

Holy Smokes...Time Flies!

Wow, I remember counting down the days until August 20. Sometimes it seemed like that day would never come, but now it has come and gone and time just keeps flying by. There have been many changes in a short amount of time.  Here is the breakdown...

WE GOT MARRIED!!!

We partied with all our wonderful family and friends (we are so glad and thankful for all those who came to celebrate with us and those who sent their well-wishes. It really made the day a lot more special!)

WE WENT ON A HONEYMOON!
Our honeymoon was actually MORE stressful than our wedding, but just as good!  Exhibit A.....we forgot out cameras, so we only have some pictures on our phones (so no picture to post). The honeymoon was amazing and relaxing and I will never forget the wonderful alone time tyler and I had.  I don't think we'll ever get something like that again!   Although we had some minor stresses such as .....forgetting to pack my hiking/running shoes to hike (we picked lake tahoe for our honeymoon because we wanted to do some hiking...oops) or almost missing our flight! (we were 1hour and 20ish min away from the airport, and decided to not check what time our flight departed, until the day of at 8:15am! Well, we found out it left at 10am, so we frantically packed and rushed to the airport. We made it to the gate right as they were boarding!)
Overall, i am so glad we took a honeymoon and i am so in love with my husband :)

I TURNED 21!
Again, no picture because we flew back from our honeymoon on my birthday and still didn't have a camera. But Tyler took me to the zoo!!! then we went to texas roadhouse...yuuum!! and had some delicious ice cream cake from coldstone and rested the rest of the night!

WE STARTED SCHOOL!
I am going into my fourth year at BYU (studying therapeutic recreation), since it took me forever to decide on what I wanted to do, I still have 3 semesters left (including this one, so i guess 2 now)!
Tyler is going into his third year at BYU and just started the business school.  I love that we both have classes in the Tanner Building (if you ever want to find us, we'll probably be at there).  School is stressful already but it is so much better being married and coming home to our apartment and having it be just the two of us! For example, this is what I came home to last night....

Change is often hard but these changes have been the best!  I am so in love with the opportunity to be at BYU, to be able to take classes, have an apartment with just Tyler, grow older, and best of all, I am able to experience all these changes with tyler.
With all these changes I know that tyler and I will always be constant and that he will always be next to me, no matter what. Knowing that makes life less scary and way more fun and secure.  I love life and wouldn't have it any other way!

Almost There...

This is what I feel like today.....  (click on words to watch video)
That video is really better than words to describe how I feel, haha

Only 4 1/2 days until the wedding....and I almost wouldn't mind if time slowed down a little. There is so much to do and I'm really starting to lose my sanity!  That's all for now....probably until after the wedding!!

But I really hope you enjoyed the video!
